Pool disinfection products: use them properly and protect yourself!
With summer approaching, the FPS Health, the Belgian Federation of Swimming Pool and Wellness Professionals and the Centre are joining forces to prevent accidents involving pool maintenance products. These products should be used with caution. In 2024, the Poison Control Centre received 275 calls concerning exposure to these products. In total, there were 307 victims, including 112 children (aged 14 and under).
With a brochure and posts on social networks, a prevention campaign informs the public about the correct use of swimming pool products and the right things to do in the event of an accident.
PROTECT YOURSELF AND USE THE PRODUCTS SAFELY!
There are three main ways of being exposed to swimming pool products: by inhaling chlorine vapours, through local contact with the skin or eyes, or by swallowing chlorine. These incidents can be avoided by taking a few precautions:
- Product storage: Keep products in their original packaging, tightly closed and out of the reach of children and animals.
- Handling and dosing: Always read the label and follow the instructions associated with the hazard symbols carefully. Wear appropriate protective equipment.
- Safety during use: Handle products in a well-ventilated area using clean, dedicated tools.
